Solar Homes Save Big Money

Desert SunshineIn this article the rapidly declining cost of solar installations VS. the potential savings is highlighted with colorful graphs. There are state by state breakdowns for each category including pay back time andaverage 20 year savings. Interestingly enough the saving vary widely state by state (due to different energy rates) with Hawaii coming in on top with a predicted $60,000 plus savings in 20 years time.

According to the charts, in California, you can cover the cost of Solar install in just 9 years and the average savings for 20 years tops $34,000.

It might be easy to assume that California is at the top of the pack in Solar energy power but sever states are ahead of us as this chart including the surprise of New Jersey from Zachary Shahan shows:

College Of The Desert West Valley Campus

If you have taken a ride out toward I-10 on Indian Avenue lately, you have no doubtly seen the activity taking place near Tramview Rd.  It is the very beginning stages of the West Valley Campus of the College of the Desert.

This ambitious project, that began with a voter approved Bond measure back in 2004, will surely transform the north end of Palm Springs for years to come.  Not just the intial jobs - estimated at 200 to 250 - but, once open, the ongoing employment opportunities.  More importantly the concept and plan for the school involves heavy use of the emerging green technologies.  The campus itself is designed to generate all of its own power from day one.

With help from Southern California Edison the school will open with a solar plant already in place. Design elements have been put in place to use the wind and sun to maximum advantage while still having a very user friendly campus. Artists renderings on the site are very exciting, be sure to check those out.

The campus is to be built out in several phases but the first one will open in 2014.  There are 119 acres on the site. The economic boost to the Palm Springs area will be very welcome but the hidden benefits of this great community resource may be the biggest pay off.  Attracting talented professionals and a younger demographic to the Palm Springs area could make our great, diverse community even more dynamic and appealing.

Cool Homes In The Hot Desert

[caption id="attachment_1460" align="alignright" width="300" caption="A New World Of Style and Design"][/caption]

The September 2011 Issue of Los Angeles Magazine has a great feature on three unique Desert homes.  The article is called Sand and Stone and can be seen in the LA Magazine online digital edition.

The homes featured are  Desert House, Acido Dorado and The itHouse.

The Desert House is located in Desert Hot Springs, located west of town on a hill with commanding views back towards Palm Springs and the San Jacinto Mountain Range. Prefab construction. It is currently offered for sale as a short sale for $599,000.

Acido Dorado is located in Joshua Tree.  Through the innovative use of concrete, mirror and metal melds itself into the stark but dramatic landscape in a way that makes it seem as if it just belongs. This home is in a rental program and has been used for fashion shoots all of which you can see by following the link provided above.

The itHouse is located above Pioneer town, the funky, hip former western movies set located just west of Yucca Valley. The house is off the grid and is partially powered by solar panels.

All of these properties show out of the box thinking in both materials and design and are a breath of fresh air. With the current movement and popularity of Green technologies we are sure to see more structures with these elements in the Desert soon.

Cool Your Summer off with Hot rebates From SCE

Did you know you could get a $300 rebate just for installing an evaporative cooling system? Just in time for the hot weather Southern California Edison offers this great deal.

For the Evaporative cooler there are some rules and they are:

  1. Be permanently installed.

  2. Have UL recognized electrical components.

  3. Come with a water quality management system that provides positive removal of sump water on a regular interval (a bleed system is not allowed).

  4. Have a single duct or multi ducted distribution system.

  5. Have either:

    1. A multi-function manual control switch which offers high and low fan speed, pump on or off and the unit control of on or off. When a multifunction manual control switch is used, pressure relief dampers are not required.

    2. A thermostat specifically designed for evaporative coolers which automatically controls the unit operation based on the indoor temperature, fan speed, and pump operation. The automatic thermostat must be mounted remotely from the cooler. If new pressure relief dampers are installed, they must be indicated on your proof of purchase.

Get more Details on  the SCE site

While you are on the SCE site be sure to check out their rebates on everything else like window unit air conditioners.

Thinking about solar energy? Find out more about SCE solar energy programs.

Save money up front and  in the long term.  Ask me how I can save you even more no matter what state you live in!

Solar power - green energy - renewable energy all hot topics in the world today. Now the Southern California Desert area will be at the core of the new technologies that many hope will drive an economic resurgence for the region and the nation.

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced Monday the final approval of Solar Millennium's 1,000-megawatt solar thermal plant that is scheduled to break ground by the end of the year.
