Indian Canyons In Palm Springs Closed By Storm

Many times people will ask why we have the large channel - often called the wash - running through the valley. If you approach the populated areas near the base of the mountains you will often find ravines or drainage areas that are set up to divert water from the Mountains. An example of the need for these came this past week when every afternoon brought heavy mountain rainfall. The amount of rainfall in the Desert actually was not that much - but the runoff from the storm in the mountains created problems for our beautiful Indian Canyons in South Palm Springs. Here is an excerpt with a link to the rest of the story and video on THE DESERT SUN website:

PALM SPRINGS — The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians indefinitely shut down Tahquitz and Indian canyons Thursday because of damage that was caused by this week’s flooding.

“The Indian Canyons are nearly unrecognizable in the condition they are in today,” tribal Chairman Jeff Grubbe said in a news release announcing the closures. “We are working diligently to assess the damage and determine the next steps to remove debris, repair damage and return the canyons back to as close to their natural beauty as possible.”
